The shortage that isn’t

“There isn’t a shortage of drivers. There’s a shortage of drivers willing to drive for what’s on offer.”

Drivers have been saying it for years, in cab chat, truck-stop queues and comment sections. The driving is rarely the problem. It’s everything bolted on around it:

  • Hours at the gateSat at a distribution centre, off the clock in all but name, while the booked slot comes and goes.
  • Rates that don’t movePay that has barely shifted while diesel, food, rent and mortgages have all gone up.
  • Nowhere to parkNowhere safe to stop at the end of a shift, and nowhere decent to wash or eat when you do.
  • A cab that watches youTrackers, telematics scores and cameras, run by people who have never slept in a bunk.
  • The body sends the billLong days and early starts the body takes at twenty-five and pays for at fifty.

If the gap is about willingness, a good driver has leverage. You just need three things.

What you really earn

Not the advertised rate — the real figure per hour once every unpaid minute is counted.

What the rules say

About your hours, breaks, working time, pay for waiting, and your licence.

What else is out there

Other firms, other work, agency, limited company or your own truck — and what each really pays.

Try it on your last week

The rate on the advert isn’t your rate.

Your true hourly rate is what you took home for the week, divided by every hour the job took — door to door, including the waiting nobody paid for. Put in your own numbers.

YOUR TRUE HOURLY RATE
£13.09

That’s £2.91 an hour less than the advert.

Illustration only; nothing is sent anywhere. The 7-Day Pay Audit walks you through doing this properly with a week of real records.

  • Waiting at the RDCKnow Your Worth, Chapter 3: what the rules say about waiting, how to keep your own record, and how to raise it with the traffic office.
  • “A wait is not a break”Rule 8 of The 15 Rules: why logging waiting time as a break costs you twice.
  • Periods of availabilityThe most misused button on the tacho, explained in plain English in Chapter 5.
  • Comparing job offersChapter 9 works out the true hourly rate of three example jobs side by side — the highest advert doesn’t win.

The handbook

Know Your Worth

181 pages · 20 chapters in 5 parts

The UK HGV driver’s handbook to pay, hours, rights and running your own truck.

  • Follow the money from shelf to cab: where your rate comes from, and whether your firm looks healthy or struggling.
  • Drivers’ hours, working time, breaks and periods of availability on one page — plus tachos, telematics, cab cameras, CPC and medicals.
  • Employed, agency, limited company or owner-driver; the twelve questions to ask before you sign; scripts for asking for more.
  • Clean Air Zones and London permits, parking up safely, cargo theft, fuel that saves real money, and looking after your body and mind.
  • Going it alone: the O-licence, a full year’s owner-driver costs, pricing a load, getting paid, and your exit plan.
The 15 Rules of the Road cover
The habits

The 15 Rules of the Road

83 pages · 15 rules

The rules nobody teaches at training school — the mistake each one fixes, and what that mistake costs you.

  • Rules of Money: know your true hourly rate; if it isn’t written down, it wasn’t agreed; never price a job you haven’t costed.
  • Rules of the Law: your card, your licence, your risk; nobody can make you run over your hours; a wait is not a break.
  • Rules of the Long Haul: sleep is part of the job; park for safety, not convenience; plan your exit while you’re still earning.
  • Every rule shows the cost in money, licence, health or time — and what to do instead.
  • All fifteen on one page at the back, to keep in the cab.
The 7-Day Pay Audit cover
The workbook

The 7-Day Pay Audit

28 pages · one week

A one-week plan to find out what you really earn per hour — and what to do about it.

  • Day by day: gather your paperwork, log every hour, find the hidden unpaid time, work out your true rate.
  • Then check your rights, compare the market, and make your move.
  • Fill-in tables, a simple formula and a worked example — a notebook and your phone’s calculator are all you need.
  • Ends with a decision: ask for more, change job, or change how you work — with the words to use.

Sold together as one bundle. The three books are written to work as a set — understand the job, fix the habits, then audit your own week.

Meet the author

Gary Webster

Gary is a UK HGV driver. On his YouTube channel he talks about the job as drivers actually live it — the pay, the hours, the waiting, the parking and the pressure — and the viewers who watch it are mostly drivers too.

These books grew out of the questions that keep coming up there. They set out how the money flows, what the rules really say, how to compare one job against another, and what a truck really costs to run — in plain English, from the driver’s side, and fair to the good employers and honest hauliers who do things properly.

Knowing your worth is never about cutting corners. A driver who knows the rules properly is harder to push around, not easier.

The books speak as books, not memoirs: examples are illustrations and their numbers are labelled as such. Where law, tax or health is involved, they tell you where to check — GOV.UK, DVSA, DVLA, HMRC, ACAS, an accountant or your GP.

Questions drivers ask

Are these printed books?

No. The bundle is three PDF ebooks — Know Your Worth (181 pages), The 15 Rules of the Road (83 pages) and The 7-Day Pay Audit (28 pages). You can print any pages you like, such as the checklists or the workbook tables.

What can I read them on?

Anything that opens a PDF: a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. No special app or account is needed — the reader built into your phone or browser is fine.

How do I get them after paying?

Checkout is handled by Gumroad. As soon as payment goes through you get your download link on screen and a receipt by email, so you can download it again later.

Can I buy just one of the books?

No — they’re sold together as one bundle. They’re written as a set: the handbook, the rules behind it, and the workbook to apply it to your own week.

Is it up to date, and does it cover my work?

It’s written for HGV drivers working in Great Britain in 2026: the retained EU and GB domestic drivers’ hours rules, the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations, Driver CPC, medicals, Clean Air Zones and London’s permits. Rules and charges change, so the books tell you where to check the current position for your vehicle and your work.

Is this legal or financial advice?

No. It explains the rules and the money in plain English and points you to GOV.UK, the DVSA, DVLA, HMRC or ACAS — or an accountant or GP — for your own situation. Nothing in it suggests running over your hours, fiddling a tacho or cutting a corner.

I’m thinking of going owner-driver. Is there enough on that?

Part 5 of Know Your Worth covers it: getting an operator’s licence, a full year’s costs set out line by line (as a labelled illustration), buying a used truck, pricing a load, contracts, getting paid, and the single-customer trap.

What if it isn’t for me?

Refunds follow the policy shown at checkout. If something’s wrong with your download, get in touch using the contact link at the bottom of this page.
